Though I do enjoy getting massages, I never much liked the idea of a massage chair. They always looked stupid for one thing, and I always figured that if I couldn’t convince anyone to give me a massage when I really needed one, getting a fancy chair was probably one of the least of my worries. Besides, the only massage chairs I’d ever seen where awkward looking, vibrating contraptions which made anyone using one talk like they were driving down a wash-boarded road. Then, in a few short moments, all of my opinions on massage chairs were radically changed.
It was the day after Christmas, and my family was running around town on their yearly after-Christmas shopping spree. My mother and aunts were up at the crack of dawn to scurry about from one store to the other, snapping up all of the great bargains on holiday lights and decorations. I got up quite a bit later with my uncles, and we set out to exchange a few gifts and buy any presents that nobody had been considerate enough to buy for us. Though I usually saw Christmas as a relatively joyous time, I wasn’t really enjoying wading through the crowds at the malls or the lines at the checkout counters.
When we were wandering down a strip of storefronts we decided to stop in at The Sharper Image on a whim. Though we didn’t plan on buying anything, the place usually had some interesting (though often useless) gadgets. We fiddled with battle robots and wondered at the uses of the ionic air cleaners, but I was intrigued when I saw the massage chair. It seemed popular; quite a few people rotated in and out of it, smiling when the punched a few of the buttons. All of the holiday shopping had taken its toll on me, and since I wasn’t going to ask my uncle for a massage any time soon I decided to try out the massage chair.
I plopped down and pushed one of the buttons, and instead of the annoying vibration of other massage chairs, this one began to gently knead my back. Working from the shoulders, it kneaded down my back and then rolled up and down the small of my back. It was heavenly. I spent quite awhile fooling with the complicated controls of the highbrow massage chair; a few minutes later my uncles were ready to leave but I wanted to stay awhile longer.
